Technology Building Blocks To Overcome GenAI-only Hallucination
There’s no shortage of content out there warning about the risks of using GenAI on its own—especially when it’s not grounded in structured data. And with good reason. We’ve seen firsthand how hallucinations can slip through even the most polished outputs when there’s no logical framework behind the words.
When we launched SecureCHEK AI back in 2019, it was the first AI-powered prechecking tool for MLR review. At the time, we leaned into rules-based Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning/Analytical AI because that combination worked. It brought structure and logic to a messy world of unstructured, human-generated content—and turned it into something actionable.
Back in those “old days,” that blend of language and logic wasn’t just smart—it was necessary to address the unmet need for MLR efficiency. Then GenAI became publicly available in 2022, and it was the shiny new tool that lit up the industry. Everyone was blown away. By 2023, adoption picked up fast across sectors. And by 2024, we saw the shift—from playing with it, to operationalizing and scaling GenAI inside real enterprise workflows.
And SecureCHEK AI was ready.
In early 2023, we engineered GenAI implementation into our platform—but with a switch. We made it possible to turn GenAI on or off, depending on a client’s needs or governance guidelines. That may sound simple, but at the time, AI Governance Committees were still raising flags. Some clients told us they were relieved they could go to their internal legal teams and say: “Yes, GenAI is turned OFF in our deployment.” That flexibility mattered then—and still does now.
Fast forward to today, and you’ve got a new wave of companies entering the market with impressive GenAI-powered solutions for MLR review. Some of the demos are flashy, no doubt. But I haven’t sat in on their pitches, so I can’t speak to how—or if—they’re handling the persistent issue of hallucinations. Nor do I know how their models detect nuanced, document-level errors, which we all know are mission-critical in life sciences.
What I do know is this: earlier precheck tools relied on Analytical AI and ML, just like we did. But now, many of those same vendors are using GenAI primarily for content creation, not as part of a structured, rules-based system that helps ground GenAI outputs in fact-based logic. That’s where SecureCHEK AI still stands apart. We’ve always believed that GenAI is powerful—but only when it’s paired with structured data and logic. Alone, it’s a brilliant assistant. Combined with grounded intelligence, it becomes a trusted partner.
